When should I drop my pet off at the hospital?
It’s difficult to know in advance the exact time of your pet’s scheduled surgery, so your pet should be dropped off in the morning when the hospital first opens, unless otherwise instructed by your veterinarian. This will give the staff time to administer a mild sedative to ease your pet’s stress, insert an IV catheter, and complete any last minute tests prior to surgery.
When will I hear about the surgery?
We know that waiting for information can be a very stressful time, and we strive to keep you informed of the progress of your pet’s surgery. Surgical Care Specialists utilizes a texting service to provide real-time updates on the status of your pet’s care on the day of surgery. If you text the word SURGERY to 313131 on your mobile device, followed by the name of your pet, you will receive status updates that alert you when Dr. Heyman has arrived at the hospital, and when surgery is beginning and ending. Once your pet has been moved to the recovery room, you will receive a phone call from Dr. Heyman to discuss the procedure and post-operative care, and answer any questions you may have.
What should I bring to the hospital?
On the day of surgery, please bring with you any medications your pet has been taking, any prescription food, and any of your pet’s X-rays, medical records, or blood work you may have. If your pet has been using a splint, Elizabethan collar, or harness, please bring it with you so that it can be reapplied after surgery. Please do not bring any bedding or toys, as these can get lost or damaged.
When will my pet be discharged?
Some procedures can be performed as an outpatient procedure, allowing your pet to go home the day of surgery, while others will require overnight hospitalization. Your veterinarian will be able to tell you in advance if an overnight stay will be necessary.
