Dr. Steven J. Heyman grew up on Long Island, NY and followed in his father’s footsteps by becoming a surgeon, although his father’s patients walked on only two legs. He completed his undergraduate degree at the University of Pennsylvania in 1983, where he majored in the Biological Basis of Behavior. He graduated summa cum laude and was inducted into the Phi Beta Kappa national honor society. He attended veterinary school at the University of Pennsylvania, graduating cum laude in 1987. He was selected for admission to the Society of Phi Zeta, the national veterinary honor society. He completed his internship and three-year surgical residency at the Veterinary Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania in 1991.
Upon completion of his residency, Steve moved to Cheshire, Connecticut, where he joined the staff of the Cheshire Veterinary Hospital. During his tenure there as a staff surgeon, Steve completed his credentialing to become a Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Surgeons in 1993.
Yearning to expand the surgical options for veterinarians and pet owners in Connecticut, Steve ventured out on his own in 1994 to start Surgical Care Specialists. “I understand the relationships between clients, their pets, generalists, and specialists, and by providing mobile surgical services, I am able to offer advanced surgical care while strengthening those relationships.”
Steve has three grown children — Andrew, Matthew, and Jennifer — and an amazingly affectionate cat named Nugget. During his free time, Steve is an avid scuba diver, and enjoys motorcycling, hiking, camping, and frequent trips to New York City and Philadelphia.
